I determined that the malfunction is being caused by the patch:
"kubuntu_09_flickerfree_qiconview.dpatch" (see  Bug 209227).

As a matter of fact, the library file libqt-mt.so.3.3.8 obtained by
compiling the source package qt-x11-free_3.3.8-b-0ubuntu3 *without*
applying that patch works correctly with showimg; the one obtained with
that patch applied (default) shows the malfunction.

IMHO the patch should be either revised and corrected or removed in a
future update (or maybe showimg should be patched to work correctly with
the current library).
