I assigned as global shortcut for the kickoff menu in Kubuntu 9.04 beta
ALT+ENTER

This works in that the kickoff menu is expanded, however, kickoff does
not gain focus. I need to move the mouse to go to the search box, before
I can start typing.

Without the using the mouse, the keyboard input keeps going to the last used application. 
This is highly annoying as it destroys working with the keyboard only.
