No, I guess I wasn't very clear.
The "Software Updates" program kept showing the same error message, before and after rebooting, claiming that another package manager was already running.
But, after rebooting, I found it hard to believe that the other program was still running, so I ran "apt-get" - and "apt-get" gave me the correct error message.
