Ok after messing around a bit I seem to have found a work around for the
problem.

Firstly use Amarok 2 to fully index your music collection. THEN use the
collection import wizard to load in your old database. This seems to
have done the trick for me although there is no way to know if it has
imported all the data (ratings, play counts, etc) for each and every
file...
