this seems not a problem of modeset, it just makes the problem appear less often, i and others (see above) can still get the flickering without modesetting.
from what i understand from the comments above the problem is how the kde/gnome/xfce power managers react to brightness changes. it is already fixed in kde but not in gnome and xfce. there is a bug in the gnome bugtracker, i dont know about xfce because i dont use xubuntu.
