1) Kubuntu 9.10 with PPA packages
 2) 3.4.0-3u
 3) I expect samba to be installed by kdenetwork package or by default on install. No simple user will know what samba is or what packages he will use. Even I've been using linux for years now and I didn't know if I should choose samba or samba4. 
 4) samba is not prepared for use after install
