I have investigated this further, and the dialog has been greatly improved in KDE 4.2. The popups have been removed entirely and focus never is taken from the search bar. Searching also does not start until you have stopped typing.

KDE 4.2 packages are available for Kubuntu Jaunty via normal means and
also to Kubuntu Intrepid from the kubuntu-experimental package archive.
