Sorry Jonathan. The problem was so severe that I couldn't cope with it.
I needed my laptop working, so I finally removed KDE 4.1 and installed
KDE 3.5 on Intrepid. Now everything works fine, but the original copies
of Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old are no longer available.
