Same problem (Gnome on Ubuntu 9.04).  Kile gets super slow and noise
appears in the window.

So, I thought, Kile be damned, I'll download TexMaker and use it.  The
same problem occurs there.

The slow-typing etc. did not occur in open OpenOffice windows.

Restarting fixed it.  Like Windows :(

Seems to be some problem in the communication between Kile and (a
particular state of) the graphics engine.  Just guessing.
