I installed 5 updates:

python-packagekit_0.4.8-0ubuntu3
packagekit-backend-apt_0.4.8-0ubuntu3
packagekit_0.4.8-0ubuntu3
libpackagekit-qt11_0.4.8-0ubuntu3
libpackagekit-glib11_0.4.8-0ubuntu3

and the notifications seem to be working fine again; anyway the issue
with the battery widget still remains.
