Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

When adding a picture to a contact
(edit contact / misc / photo)
from a http:// URL,

the following error message is displayed.

title: Error - Kontact
message: URL cannot be listed
<insert entered url here>
button: OK

ok must be clicked not just once but twice. (closing the message window
with "X" in the titlebar works too.)

When using images from the web as sources for the contact photos, usually, in my case anyway, the url is valid just to a specific picture and does not mean that there should be a directory listing of available pictures at that location.

After clicking away the error message, twice, the "Open - Kontact" window is shown. The location bar contains most of the URL used previously for adding a photo. The (file) name section is filled out with the tail part of the URL.

A similar experience is to be had when proceeding, opening an image from
the web. To do so, I enter the URL (http://server/dir/dir/dir/file.jpg)
in the name field and click "Open".

An error that appears to be the same appears:
URL cannot be listed
http://server/dir/dir/dir/file.jpg
   with an OK button

This time this message only appears once. Clicking away the window
either via the OK button or the X lets me continue. Next the photo from
the URL is displayed in a window to be cropped (title: Select Region of
Image - Kontact). cropping works, adding the picture works.

Just because "http://server/dir/dir/dir/file.jpg" can be accessed does not mean
http://server/dir/dir/dir/ can be accessed and also does not mean that http://server/dir/dir/dir/ returns a list of its contents.

general details:
1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu 9.04
Release:        9.04

2)
$ apt-cache policy kontact
kontact:
  Installed: 4:4.2.95a-0ubuntu1~jaunty~ppa1
  Candidate: 4:4.2.95a-0ubuntu1~jaunty~ppa1
  Version table:
 *** 4:4.2.95a-0ubuntu1~jaunty~ppa1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3)
It seems to me as the user I did nothing wrong here and therefore do not expect to see the error messages (especially when clicking photo the first time, since it loads up a previously used URL). Instead I expect that using a URL in the form of http://server/dir/dir/dir/file.jpg results in no error message so long as the file is valid and contains valid picture data. Is there a requirement that only 'browseable' sources can be used? Well actually getting the picture added works just fine.

4)
Instead, the error message detailed above was shown.
