You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the Final release version of Kubuntu 9.04 amd64 CD, the disk fails to
start the KDE desktop and ends on a shell prompt. That was caused by a
last minute change in the amd64 spin branch since previous releases of
the betas and RC boot to KDE without problems. Also, the Final i386
version of Kubuntu 9.04 do not have the issue.

I can reproduce the issue on my system. Every time I try to start it
with the Kubuntu 9.04 Live CD amd64 it fails the X start and ends up on
a shell. Repeating the Process with the Kubuntu 9.04 Live CD amd64 RC
ends up with a workable KDE desktop.
