Also, I forgot to mention:

When I run "plasma&" I get about 15 copies of this:

ERROR: syntax error

When the plasma stops responding, I get the same painter errors as noted
above by Tris_r.

When I kill plasma by running "kquitapp plasma", I get about 30 copies
of this:
