Yes, I get crashes with compositing on. I cannot say if turning compositing off 
helps, as:
- System Settings -> Look&Feel -> Display Effects only allows to temporarily 
suspend compositing, not disable it completely
- I get kwin crashes upon startup - when compositing is always reenabled
