I tried again with this kword version:

Package: kword-kde4
Version: 1:2.0.81-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa3

 - the crash does not occur any longer (therefore it is no longer a security issue)
 - kword still refuses to load the file and displays this error message:

Could not import file of type
application/msword
