Sorry I mean if you run akonaditray a systray icon should appear with a
tooltip (blue globe in the bottom right if your screen).  What does the
tooltip say?

You can also install KDE PIM 4.4.8 from this PPA, it contains many
bugfixes over the version in Kubuntu 10.04.
