Left click on the network icon in the system tray, then select "manage connections".
Select "wired connections" tab. The "Auto eth0" connection is availble for operations (delete or modification)
Select "Add new connection" and in the new window the "system connection" check box is available for selection.

4. Reported behavior
=================
Left click on the network icon in the system tray, then select "manage connections".
Select "wired connections" tab. The "Auto eth0" connection is not shown at all, but it's effective nonetheless.
Select "Add new connection" and in the new window the "system connection" check box is DISABLED.

=========
Under GNOME the similar applet is perfectly working, so it's an applet issue, not a backend one.
