@Jonathan - thanks for testing! Good news. Yes, I think you are right re
friendly-recovery.

@Erick and others - I attach an updated gdm.conf which might help.
Looking at the old gdm.conf, I think it was missing a condition which
this new gdm.conf adds. Please let me know your findings. Thanks for
your patience!
