The best workaround I've found is to disable transitions in the kde
slideshow screensaver

As explained at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182104#c11

Add the following line:
EffectsEnabled=false
to the end of the file:
~/.kde/share/config/kslideshow.kssrc

or, in commands:
cat ~/.kde/share/config/kslideshow.kssrc
echo "EffectsEnabled=false" >> ~/.kde/share/config/kslideshow.kssrc
