You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Summary: several nepomuk processes are entered into the kde startup
configuration file ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc. A side effect of
this is that the Kickoff application launcher Leave actions Logout,
Shutdown and Restart are no longer functional. Rather than launching
a pop-up that asks the user to cancel or activate immediately or counts
down to action, absolutely nothing happens. The buttons appear useless.
Details: Installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new Samsung laptop (model NP365E5C-S02US),
installed kubuntu-desktop and updated all packages. (Due to the Samsung
EFI issue, I used compatibility mode BIOS). I installed the AMD/ATI
crystal 13.1 video driver (which might or might not be related).
I set up a user with a KDE environment. After logging in,
Kickoff->Leave->{Logout,Shutdown,Reboot} would successfully start a pop-up
and work correctly. After some period of use (no apparent direct cause,
just time passing), the Kickoff Logout functionality does not work, nor does
the (upper right corner Desktop -> Leave) function.
By creating a new KDE user, I verified that by default everything works fine.
But again, after some period of time, the Leave functions no longer worked
in this second, freshly created kde user, with no clear change.
By saving before and after ~/.kde/share/config files and backing out
the pieces, I found that the only file that made a difference was
~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc. By backing out various applications within
the file, I found that the appended ksmserverrc was sufficient to
render the Leave functions inoperable. Only nepomuk related processes
are involved.
As a plea from a user who has seen Leave problems before, and seen many
reports on the web of Leave issues, and spent hours tracking down this
problem, could the KDE community please make Leave operations more bullet-proof
and more easily debuggable? I could understand Logout hanging, but when
Leave doesn't even lead to a Logout dialog, that seems really broken.
Thanks,
Jon Bayh
