Due to some other (possibly unrelated) problem I was forced to run

kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

which complained

 "KConfigIni: In file /usr/share/kde4/services/muon-knsplasmoids-backend.desktop, line 111: " Invalid entry (empty key)
