I finally stumbled upon this.. explains everything.

Short version: Ubuntu is shipping with gdb compiled with python V3 which is incompatible with Python V2.
QTCreator's scripts are written in Python V2.

I had gotten further with this ppa version which has the helper python
scripts.. but still has errors due to  GDB + python
V3.http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/ubuntu_sdk_release/saucy/main/base/qtcreator

So the options seem to be:  Move to QTCreator 3     or     compile and
use a GDB with python 2.7
