Exact same situation here. I recently switch from Unity because I got
fed up with al it's quirks but Unity did handle this external-monitor
setup flawlessly: when I would connect my external monitor it would be
activated right away. If I then close my laptop lid, it turns of the
laptop display. When I disconnect the external monitor, the internal
laptop display is reactivated.

In KDE, none of this happens. When I first connect the external monitor,
I get a popup asking me if it should try automatically. Why doesn't it
just try automatically right away, and give me one of those nifty KDE
notifications informing me that I can change the setup if I want to?

Same situation: same Ubuntu version, same KDE 4.12 PPA.
