Here are my /var/log/apt and /var/log/installer logs.

Since I am not used to this kind of work it took some time to retrieve
them. Perhaps someone could have guided me.

Some further experiment show that nomodeset in grub makes Kubuntu boot
to the screen where you choose to "Try Kubuntu" or "Install Kubuntu". If
you choose "Try Kubuntu" the Live session crashes as before. I have not
tried the Install option. This is my production machine and I can not
experiment on it.
