this may or may not be related...
upon restarting from the live usb, it got through the remove medium and hit enter to restart message... then got stuck on a kill pid[4395]ntfsresize, it repeated this over and over  I could not even get it to accept a ctrl-alt-F3 to get to a terminal. 
I had to shut off the power to the system to get it to shut down...
