Problem still exists in Kubuntu 23.10.  When the password is expired,
the first login attempt always fails, whether or not the password is
correct.  The second attempt causes the screen to freeze; moving the
mouse moves the cursor, but nothing else can be done.

I could still get a text console with CNTL-ALT-F4, and log in from there
with the old password.  I am immediately prompted for a new password.
