If you are going to change the sddm avatar with the option to rename an image file to .face.icon in /home/yourusername as shown in the lubuntu manual, it just doesn't show it, the only way to do it is setting the full path and renaming it to yourusername.face.icon .

/usr/share/sddm/faces/yourusername.face.icon
