Roughly:
sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/seq*

More interestingly, I recommend that you download a recent daily-live
Kubuntu desktop image and install and use powertop.  Lucid contains
more hooks for determining what is causing the symptom.
