Found it.. It's in the Kontrol Panel settings under "Desktop -> Window
Behavior" then the tab "Translucency"
I've just figured out that the "grey out" I was describing is in fact
background windows being set translucent with a shadow behind them..
It's a pity it makes my poor ATI powered Laptop struggle so much.
Shadows add so much depth to the desktop and the "grey out" trick is
REALLY useful for "focus".
I'll test this on my Nvidia powered desktop and see how it goes..
