AMD-64 and Flash plugin

   Hi!

I remember trying some kind of libflash thing that I found as a
Synaptic-package (in Ubuntu ;-) too... didn't really work... I think
it might work with some old or simple flash movies only.
Since there's no flash plugin from Macromedia for AMD-64 and it's not
opensource so others can't fix it.
Here's a petition if you want to encourage Macromedia to do something
about it: http://www.petitiononline.com/lin64swf/petition.html

Meanwhile the solution is to install a mini-installation of the i386
system in a so called chroot-environment. In this a 32bit version of
Firefox (or whatever browser you use) can be ran with which you can
use flash-plugin, java, realplayer, Skype and whatever other
non-64bit application you might need. There are also more packages
available through Synaptic/Kynaptic in 32bit, ie. Wine which is not
available in the 64bit system.

Using a 32 bit chroot environment doesn't mean rebooting into an i386
installation, once installed all the applications ran in the 32bit
environment run much the same way as they would outside of it... you
hardly notice any difference.

Since Ubuntu is more common than Kubuntu but kind of is the same
might want to Google for something like: flash ubuntu 64 32 chroot howto
Personally I used these instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/
showthread.php?t=24575

I had some problems with the actual installation with the flash plug-
in though and had to do some small hacking on my own. It wouldn't
install through the browser, and when I tried the shellscript
installer it refused to install cause it thought that I was using an
unknown architecture (amd64 ;-) even though I used it within the
chroot-environment. Well I worked it around by hacking the script to
ignore my kind of architecture. But this wasn't mentioned on the
howto page, so maybe I did something else wrong which caused this...
so you just try with the instructions and also remember to read
peoples' comments below, since they contain some useful stuff too.

Good luck!

   cheers, Simon
