Won't help here.

The only think I can think is to remove (purge) the
current (half-)installed Java and install it new from
the sources above.

sudo dpkg purge /var/cache/apt/archives/j2re1.4_1.4.2.01-1_i386.deb ??

or

sudo aptitude purge sun-j2re  (maybe complete with Tab)

Not sure with the first one, because I only use the backends
(apt-get / aptitude).
