Restoration of Desktop Trash Icon

The OP's question got me thinking so I googled 'KDE desktop "trash 
icon"' (without the '').  That turned up the following (2nd hit when I 
tried):

It's not for Kubuntu but it's enough to employ some lateral thinking to come 
up with a solution for Kubuntu:
1. Create the ~/Desktop/Trash *directory*
2. Dump the attached ".directory" file in the directory in #1.
3. Refresh the desktop (Right-click the desktop, select refresh) - voila!
