If you don't need the graphical interface a Pentium- CPU and 32-64 MB RAM 
should be possible. 
If you need the graphical interface you should have a Pentium II and about 128 
MB RAM, but I would recommend a Pentium III and about 256 MB RAM or more.
With more than 2 GHz and 512 MB RAM you would have a very fast system for 
(K)ubuntu :-).

Slower systems are possible, too, but I don't think that that would be fun to 
work with these Systems.
