Do you have a connection to the internet, DSL or faster? you could try
updating your packages. You should have the repositories set up already,
so just run
sudo apt-get update
and then
sudo apt-get upgrade
in the terminal window. This will install all the updates into your
system. If nothing seems to happen, read the PS.
If even then you cannot login into kde, read this page:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/BinaryDriverHowto
and follow the steps in installing the ATI proprietary driver fglrx.
I have radeon 9200 card on my desktop computer, and Kubuntu recognized
it fine. I was also able to get 3D and TV-out working by installing
fglrx driver.

PS. How to setup repositories, if apt-get update does not work:
run
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
to see whether your internet sources are set up. Visit
http://kudos.berlios.de/kf/kf1.html#swmgmt
to read more about software repositories, you have to have the
repositories main, universe, restricted set up for update to work (you
can also add multiverse for later use).
