New kubuntu user

I'm a new user. Downloaded the latest snapshot, Burned the CD and installed it 
on my:

Compaq Presario 714 EA Laptop with 256 MB, DVD, USB1.1 hub with ZIP100/Deskjet 
3420, and PCMCIA card with 52x CD-Writer

2 Questions from me:

1. How to get normal fonts, they appear to be very ugly. I changed them into
Bitstream Vera Sans but still ugly!!

2. The system never asked for a root password at installation time. But I need 
a root password for several actions.
