Dial Up Internet in Kubuntu

Hi There Everyone,

I'm fairly new to Linux, and very new to Kubuntu, and have an issue I hope
someone can help me with:
I am using a dial-up connection, with Tesco.net <http://Tesco.net>. I can
setup the connection with pppconfig fine, so pon/poff works. I would like to
be able to see some sort of indication of my transfer speed so when I use
apt-get or K[insert pagake manager name here, I forget what it is!] I check
that it is infact downloading the packages. I have read about a program
called ModemLights that works with pon/poff. Is this available via apt-get.
I have tried configuring kppp, but it refuses (an error with pppd, I don't
understand why). If anyone knows of a tutorial somewhere I can read to
configure kppp properly, that would be a suitable route for me!

Thanks in advance.
