One word of caution, some of the plugins, like the enigmail interface to
gpg can either be installed via the apt repositories or in the mozilla
.xpi way. Don't update a plugin installed via apt with an xpi as it
will break things. If you want to be able to update via xpi, do the
initial install that way.
Example: If you install the mozilla-Thunderbird-enigmail package and
then use the Thunderbird extension manager, it will report that there is
a newer version of enigmail. If you let it do the update, enigmail will
be broken. If you remove the apt package and install enigmail via the
xpi extension manager, all will be ok.
