Kubuntu upgrade install

Is your /home directory in it's own partition? If so, then you can put a fresh 
install of Kubuntu on your machine. When the install asks about partitioning, 
select to do the partitioning manually. Make sure that you leave the 
partition with your /home directory unformatted, but make sure you tell it to 
be mounted as /home

If not, then it depends how much data in your /home. Have you got a separate 
PC which you could network to? Do you have a spare hard drive?
