Here is a pretty comprehensive discussion of Linux Viruses.   The 
author's opinion is that to get a virus you have to be 1) trying hard to 
get the virus or 2) really foolish.    There are other security risks 
(hence the need for a firewall) but viruses and other malware are low-risk.
