Daft newbie can not get past login page

Hi

I am hoping some kind soul can give me some guidance to a linux
newbie/technodummy (please be gentle).

I am using Ubuntu/Kubuntu 5.10
I boot up ok to the login page, put the correct password in the screen
processess it for a few seconds and then returns to the login page..on
whatever option I choose kde/gnome/failsafe. What should i do.
