One common reason why KDE won't start is file permissions. For
example, if the hidden file, .ICEauthority isn't owned by you, weird
things will happen. Sometimes running something as root will cause
this problem.
In recovery mode, go to your home folder and type "ls -al" and check
through all the ownerships for anything not owned by your user
account. Change those files to match the rest (sudo chown user:user
.ICEauthority, for example) and see if that helps.
There could also be problems with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Maybe
something happened to it. You can see if there is a recent version of
that file in the /etc/X11 directory that you can use instead.
