system hangs during shutdown

First thing: Which KDE version do you have?

How long have you been waiting for KDE to shut down?

 Can you switch to one of the text consoles (using Strg-Alt-F[1-6]) after the 
screen gets black?

If you can switch to a text console: Log in and check if there is any process 
that eat's CPU (you can use top to determin the process). Also try 
a "pkill -9 kdeinit". Does this shut down your system?
