DVD crashes system

Does the normal CD work?  Have you checked the DVDs for scratches, dirt, 
or, more difficult to detect, heat distortion (leave a DVD you don't 
want out in the hot summer sun for a day or two and it warps the 
tracks - I lost a very good CD that way, unfortunately.)  The problem 
with warping is that it's near impossible to detect with the naked eye.  
I have to rely on the subtle colour change that is present.

Also, are you sure that your IDE cable is in all the way and is 
correctly configured?  Linux crashing sounds like you're having a 
problem with bad data from hardware.  Those are just the ideas I have.  
I honestly don't know the real source of your problem, but those are 
the diagnostics I'd try next.  From the information you've supplied, I 
can't see something that could be an error, except the HDIO_GETGEO 
failed: Invalid argument part.  I don't know what that is, so I can't 
offer any help there.

Hope that helps (as in: hope it's nothing more than a bad disk - those 
are easy to recover from).
