Output of "apt-cache show 915resolution" indicates that...
"If you want to automatically set the resolution on each boot
and before X is launched, see /usr/share/doc/915resolution/README.Debian
for information about configuring the provided initscript."
As I don't have 915resolution package installed, I can't suggest what/how
to configure, but I would suggest reading every file
in /usr/share/doc/915resolution/ directory. Also, "dpkg -L 915resolution"
command will list the files that come with the package. See if there are
other documentation, such as man pages etc.
Assuming everything is set up according to the docs, there may be another
reason for 1024x768, namely, incorrect Modeline entry. For instance, I
know that "via" driver is a bit picky about dot-clock values. It has a
hard coded frequency list of valid dot-clocks, and if your dot-clock in
the Modeline doesn't exactly match one of those valid ones, the "via"
driver simply skips (rejects) that modeline and selects the next best fit
resolution: There are embedded default resolutions defined within Xorg,
even if you don't define them explicitly. So, in such a scenario Xorg may
choose to reject your explicitly defined resolution in favor of some
embedded default one.
This was just an example to various possibilities (Xorg rejecting your
explicit definitions).
