Help! CUPS in Kubuntu is driving me crazy

I would have to look in my package log, but last night I got it running, and 
printing. I am hoping it will last.

First my /var/log/messages showed something about the backend not being found, 
so I dug around with synaptic, and found a package that might do it: one of 
the foomatic packages seemed to be wanted. Then, I got: another message 
about "lp0 being out of paper!" I then fiddled with the paper, and it started 
working fine. Argh!

That will teach me to ignore /var/log/messages when configuring a printer.
