I've had mostly success in updates, however on at least three times over 
the past year and a half, I've had things break after an update.

I generally look at what is being updated and decide if the items would 
be critical for me if broken. If that's the case I don't update until I 
know I have a couple of days or so that I could live with that item broken.

dist-upgrades to a new version can be entirely traumatic. :)
