OT: way to make windows less obnoxious?

I've just installed Dapper (6.06 LTS) on my Toshiba Satellite L25-S119
and it seems to work very well. Issues I had with RedHat 8 on the
Toshiba that aren't issues with Dapper involve:

USB port operation
Wireless access
Automatic shutoff
Battery charge indication

I'm not blaming RedHat 8. I've used it (and still do) for several years
with hardly a blip on an older Dell laptop on which the issues above
don't exist. I found RH8 to be so stable and useful that I've used only
Linux for several years.

I still have a few things to work out, but I'm pretty happy with Dapper.
I thank this group for some really useful help.
