On my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5672 with an Ati X1400 video card, I had 
the same problem. I followed the how-to on the ubuntu wiki reguarding 
the installation of the Ati proprietary driver and all works fine. It 
also adjusted the resolution of the desktop (1280x800).
