problems. I issued a shutdown -rF now command, & at the boot prompt, added
norestore to the end of
vmlinuz-2.6.12-9-386 root=/dev/hda8 ro quiet splash
in my default boot option at Grub's boot menu screen, so it read:
vmlinuz-2.6.12-9-386 root=/dev/hda8 ro quiet splash norestore
Search me, I have no idea why that worked. Just saw it as a suggestion on a
forum somewhere & tried it for lack of other options.
Even then it wasn't smooth. The bootup did interrupt itself with a message
telling me to hit ctrl-D to ignore the problem & continue booting. That had
never worked before; now it did. So far everything seems good with the
running of the system itself. All my user settings etc etc seem fine.
Strange.
There has to be a better way to handle the next time my system freezes. (Given
it's a P4 2.1 ghz with 384 megs of RAM, it's kind of surprising that a
slideshow on Shutterfly.com caused Firefox & the system to freeze in the
first place. Stupid scripts.)
Thanks a ton anyway,
Wafa.

"One of the many major problems with governing people is that
of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get
people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who
must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited
to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting
themselves made President should on no account be allowed to
do the job."
