The problem is your index file.  The problem with KDE in my opinion is that it 
has a thousand icon directories, and X doesn't have a central icon directory.  
so, what happens is that if you get some hairbrained KDE upgrade that doesn't 
take into account your current ICON setup you lose at least your GNOME icons.

The index file in question is located in your theme's directory such as:
/usr/share/icons/crystalsvg
and the file name will be:
index.theme

I'll try to attach my Crystal index.theme file (however it is for KDE 3.5.1).
